Illustrated Stories - Floral Improv #20

Hi there. How are you?

In my weekly series "Illustrated Stories" I have discussed my bird series, my abstract collages,  and my long running chair series. Today, I'm sharing some of my earliest mixed media work, my Floral Improv series.

Floral Improv #20

This is one of the oldest unsold pieces in my collection, and I do things much differently now than I did back in 2009 when this was created. As you can see, this piece is framed, instead of mounted on cradled hardboard as I did more recently. And look at how I signed it. I didn't even know Matt at the time. Seems like ages ago now!

This piece measures just 2.5" x 3.5" and is framed to 6" x 8".

Flower Power

The year was 2008. I started an Etsy shop, and ACEO's were all the rage.  ACEO's, short for Art Card, Editions and Originals are small, trading card-sized pieces of art.  Measuring just 3.5 by 2.5 inches, it was an easy and inexpensive way to collect original art.

At the time, I was still teaching, and I could quickly whip up an ACEO during my spare time or even when my students were working. Priced at $12-$20 unframed, my little floral collages sold well on Etsy. In fact,  2009 was the best year I've had on Etsy to date.

Here is a collection of my floral improvs from 2008:

Magazines and Microns

Shown here at life size,  you get an idea for how small these pieces really are.

With the exception of the the background paper, all of the collaged elements came from magazine. There are lots of old Domino magazine snippets in there! Oh how I loved that magazine.

Once all of the paper bits were glued in place, I would add detail with Micron pens. I was pretty obsessed with stipple at the time. Sometimes, I would also add a little bit of white colored pencil or gel pen. I loved the way the white popped on dark backgrounds. These ink embellishments gave these pieces life, movement, and personality. This was my favorite part of the process.

Improv

I called these pieces "improvs" as they were never based on real life flowers. Instead they were improvisational riffs on flower like shapes, cut freehand with scissors from colorful bits of magazine. There was never a real plan in mind when I began these pieces, it really all depended on what kind of colors and patterns I'd find.

Just 3 left!

This is one of just three Improvs that still remain in my collection. At $25, this would make a great gift to yourself or someone you love!

Collage is calling again

I've recently felt the urge to pick up the scissors and glue again. I want to work abstractly and intuitively, without constraints. I want to work with color. You may just see some collage show up in my Instagram feed soon!

Until next week friends. Ciao!

Illustrated Stories - A Lawn Chair in Makanda

Hi there. How are you?

In today's edition of "Illustrated Stories", I'm sharing one of my favorite pieces I've ever made. I created this piece in 2013, when I was neck deep in my lawn chair phase.

This mixed-media illustrated chair is constructed with collaged paper and ball-point pen.

The Story

I came across this chair on the roof top deck of the L.L. Bell building, on the Boardwalk in Makanda, Illinois. When I saw this slightly wonky chair and this scene, I knew it would make for a great mixed-media illustration.

The colors, lines, and textures of the chair, wall, decking, and screen door were screaming to be drawn! I love rendering wood, especially of the old, weathered variety, so I knew this piece was going to be treat to make.

I took my source photos for this piece with my iPhone. I am continually amazed at the power of the camera it contains. The iPhone beautifully captures the light, color, and detail of the scene.

Process and Materials

There are four different kinds of paper in this piece. The brick was rendered on a piece of orange patterned paper. The tonal pattern was just subtle enough that it doesn't detract from the overall scene, but instead adds some interest and texture. The decking was crafted out of a gray paper, and the door was drawn on top of a bit of vintage ledger paper. (Can you see the faint blue lines in the white areas of the door?) The chair and the other brown areas were drawn on brown craft paper. I love the soft texture and look of craft paper and it makes its way into many of my pieces.

All of the dark you see here was done with my trusty Bic ballpoint pen. Inking up my pieces is by far my favorite part of my process. Addingthe detail with ink really makes these scenes come to life!

The Title

I've often thought of my chairs as stand-ins for people. If you think of them that way the title "I've Seen" makes sense. The weathered old chair has surely been a silent observer to much up on the roof of this historic building on the Makanda boardwalk.

This piece is way too cool to be sitting on a shelf in my studio. Go on, buy it! Here's the listing:

Illustrated Stories - Chevron In Blue

Hi There. How are you?

I'm back this week to showcase and sell another original work from my collection. This one comes from my Chevron series. Back in 2012 I couldn't get enough of the bold and graphic chevron motif.

"Chevron in Blue" - mixed media collage.  Now on sale! Click through to purchase.

Chevron in Blue

This piece measures 10"x10" and was made out of patterned papers that I collected mainly from magazines. During this time, I had a huge hoard of magazines that I would scour over for good bits of color and pattern. This process eventually got too time-consuming, so I switched over to collecting and collaging with scrapbook paper instead.

After adhering all of the collaged pieces onto the blue background, I drew in some faux "stitching" with a white gel pen. I've always loved the way the white pen pops on a dark surface. (Aww, I'm getting a little nostalgic for my white gel pens. I guess it's time to pull one out and draw with it again!)

This minimalist abstract collage would make a bold statement on a white wall, propped up on a mantle or in a grouping on a shelf.

Now friends, go and buy this heavily discounted one of a kind collage! Here is the listing:

I had a major chevron phase back in 2012. In fact I think the whole design world was enamored with the chevron pattern at that time. This is one of several collages I created with this bold and graphic motif.

THE DETAILS: This original collage was created with bits and pieces of magazine paper, adhered to a royal blue paper. All pieces are glued onto the paper using a neutral pH PVA adhesive (no yellowing will occur). I then added white gel pen in a stitch like pattern and finished the piece with a protective UVA/UVB coating, so that the papers won't fade over time. This one of a kind collage measures 10" X 10" and is mounted on a 1.5"deep cradled wooden box. With a saw-tooth hanger on the back, it comes ready to hang or can sit on a ledge or shelf.

THE SHIPPING: Your piece will be wrapped in a handmade fabric bag, carefully packaged in a sturdy box, and shipped to you via USPS mail with insurance and a tracking number. I take great care to make sure my pieces are wrapped and shipped securely.
